Default Car OVERHEATING! HELP ASAP!!

So i'm sitting with my car...the heat is on engine is running. It's been on for 15 minutes. I happen to look at my temp gauge and it's in the RED ZONE. I immediaitly turn it off, smoke starts flying out of my hood. I open the hood. There is coolent everyhwere. It all drains out and i let it slowly stops smoking and starts to cool down. I got it towed to my house. What do you guys think it is. It was 10 at night and i didn't have any light so i couldnt' see if there was a bad hose. I'll be working on it tommorow. Any suggestions as to what it could be OTHER then the hose????

I NEED HELP ASAP!

Thanks

the thermostat might be stuck on the closed position.

Gonna have to agree with the above posts... Without looking under the hood a diagnosis is tough... Stuck thermostat stuck closed would account for overheating, but as far as steam everywhere sounds to me like one of your hoses probably had a leak and either burst or popped off... Hopefully its something that simple...

I'm going to look at it right now.....

could the thermo get stuck and then it build up a great amount of pressure and blow a hose??

Perhaps besides the thermostat issue you would want to ensure your fans are working.

I sit in the parking lot at work with the car running as I finish off my cigar and coffee. As I sit there idling the temp creeps up. Eventully, though, the fan comes on and cools it back down.

If it turns out to be the thermostat stuck closed, can't you buy a fail-safe thermostat so if it does fail again, it'll fail while it's stuck open? I guess the car will run rough but won't overheat. Does GM make these?

yeah, these engines can heat up. Look into the fans for sure. If it got hot enough to blow a hose, then you have a decent chance of having f'ed up something on the engine itself...

Whether or not you found a burst hose, also, check your radiator cap, the spring in it may have weakened.

Was that the plastic cap or a metal cap...?

A cap is cheap, I would recommend replacing the cap every 2 years, cheap insurance.

Yeah it was the stock PLASTIC. I got the metal replacement for a whopping 3.99. Plus coolant tho cuz mine was all over the pavement somewhere. But i am pretty sure a have a small leak somewhere. I came out this morning and it said low coolant so i just put more in the resivor.

I couldn't tell by the ground cuz the ground was already wet (stupid melting snow) so hopefully i'll be able to figure something out. I detatched the bottom hose on the raditor...hopfuly i just didnt tighten it up enough. I guess we'll see. But then again maybe it was just filling some air in the lines!
