Default Wheres the drain plug???

Im going to be doing a full drain adn flush of my coolant, but Im not exactly sure where the drain plug or knock sensor is on my 99TA.Ive looked in the haynes manual but its hard to tell where it is exactly. If someone could give me a better idea where it is it it would help out a lot. thanx

well im not sure where the knock sensor is, but to drain the radiator, there is a small valve on the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side. You should be able to find it if you get underneath the car.

The knock sensors on the ls1 are underneath the intake manifold. As far as a coolant drain plug on the block.....if memory serves me (unlikely ) there is one on the back of the block somewhere, but it's a pain to get to. If you're just flushing the radiator, you really don't need to drain the block. Just drain the radiator and run a bottle of radiator flush through the system.

If memory serves me right, there are two coolant drain plugs in the block, I believe the starter covers up one, the other one should be visible on the opposite side of the block.

I would like to drain the block also though because i think i may have some contamination from the power steering cooler screwing up a while ago.But the haynes manual shows a plug on pre 97's and a knock sensor that doubles as a drain plug on the 98+ models. The problem is the picture they give doesnt give u any reference points to where it is exactly.

Sounds like Haynes is wrong. Again.

Knock sensors are found on the lower passenger's side of the block on LT1 cars, and just a drain plug on the driver's side. On an LT1 car, you would indeed remove the knock sensor to drain that side of the block.

LS1 cars just have a drain plug on either side. Knock sensors are located below the intake manifold (under the valley cover).

Haynes = way wrong on many accounts. This being one of them.

the LS1 has 2 knock sensors. Both are under the intake manifold.

i'm about to flush my coolant as well due to the power steering fluid contamination. Is it necessary to drain from the block as well? I was just gonna drain the radiator, fill with water, run engine, drain radiator, fill with water, run engine, etc. Thing is i guess, once you drain the water from the radiator that last time and fill up with antifreeze, there's gonna be some water still in the block right? so maybe it is necessary to drain the block as well....hmmm....

yah thats my thinking too, thats why Im going to drain the block as well.So let me get this straight on my ls1 motor there are two drain plugs, one on each side of the block? It isnt the knock sensors that are the drains right?

why not just leave the water (as long as it is fresh, clean, preferably distilled) in the block? then just fill the radiator with dexcool antifreeze (enough to equal 50% of the cooling systems total capacity) and top off any remainder needed with more distilled water. could it get any simpler?

FWIW, the plug above the starter is a 8mm allen socket, and be careful. its a brass plug and theres a strong chance it might be corroded and not want to come out. so dont strip it out.
