Thumping Underneath
Ever since I got my car in October it has had a thump underneath the car (seems more toward the rear but I cant really tell too well) when I give it gas at certain low speeds (15-35MPH). I installed a Poly Tranny Mount and new U-joints thinking it would go away, but it's still there. My car is a 2001 TA A4 with 39xxx miles on it. Where the hell is it coming from? Any help would be appreciated.

Exactly. And it does it at random (including when the tranny downshifts), so I can't really replicate the condition to narrow down what it might be. Hopefully it's just exhaust. I need to get it on a lift and check it out some more.

Could be a heatshield. When I put new U-joints in it I checked out the torque arm and it seemed all right as far as where it was mounted (all bolts were tight). I didn't see any cracks or anything in it.

Yup completely stock as far as I know. It has the stock muffler and tailpipes thats for sure. Did the TA come with a 3" intermediate pipe from the factory? If so, was it mandrel bent? Because thats whats on my car. It doesn't appear to have been changed out or anything. The factory manifolds, cats, and y pipe are there too. I suppose the origional owner could have had a cat-back and replaced it with a stock muffler before trading it. The car did have a SLP strut tower brace and a K&N in it when I bought it. Beats me.

that makes sense, i really hope thats all it is and not something more serious like tranny or rear end related.

Same here. I don't want to have to shell out a ton of money for a new rear end just yet. When I do it' I want to do it right for the sake of performance rather than out of necessity because the stock one is junk after 40K.
