Compression Leak?

Compression Leak? What in the world is a compression leak? I took my car to the shop since its making a ticking noise and they said its possible that its a compression leak. However, I think its more than likely an exhaust leak as the ticking noise appears to come from the exhaust manifold to bolt area. They also said maybe a head gasket but who knows? How do you make SURE that its an exhaust leak, head gasket, or a compression leak? Thanks
