Default electrical problems

So last night while i was out cruising, my volt guage starts jumping around going crazy. While its doing that, my lights get dim. As I am driving it home the guage goes down into the red and stays there. Now i just had a new battery installed the other week. So, i replace the alternator. That doesnt fix the problem. I am not too familiar with the electronics, so i dont know what to do next. Anyone have any ideas? Thanx.

Put a digital volt meter across the battery terminals with the car running. Places like Autozone will load test the battery/check your alternator free. Did you get a rebuilt alt? Buddy of mine went threw a couple before springing for a new GM one.

yea, its a reman from pepboys. Im going to take the battery to get checked tomarrow.

currently having the same prob...

batt is good.
alt is good.

checked the voltage coming off the alt, it's pretty much just reading whatever the batt has.

I put a new alt in the car, same deal...
tried a buddies that I know works, same thing.

Checked the connector going to the alt, everythnig seems good. I think it pulls an SES when it's not connected, so I'm thinking that's not the prob, as I don't have an ses light, but could be wrong....

But I've check the batt, the wires going form the alt to the batt, and the alt, all seem good.

So I'm leaning towards that connector or some kind of cumputer deal...


let me know when you find yours....

Look for a fuse problem......There should be an alt. fuse in the fuse/relay box in the engine compartment.

Like the other guys said throw a multimeter on the battery. But try it with the car off and the probes on the cable not the battery posts. Sometimes a bad ground or poor connection will cause that kind of stuff. Testing like I said will insure a good connection. With the car off it should be about 12volts and with the car on it should be about 14volts. Later.

I have checked all the fuses and connections, i even removed the alt and put it back in. Still the same thing. Im going to take it to advance auto in the morning and have them test the system.
