rediculous gas gauge on my 96ss
let me explain. when i fill up my car, it goes like a quarter past the F mark. ok cool whatever. with regular driving, it takes a while for the needle to move down. when the needle reaches the halfway mark, i know i need to get gas pretty soon. cuz a couple of hard launches or whatever, it will go down to the 1/4 mark and now i need gas bad. i think i have less than a gallon at this mark. and when it reaches E, it really is emtpy.
when i bought the car, the gas was between 1/4 and 1/2. drove it on the freeway home like 15 miles away, and it died on the freeway. no gas. wtf. lols
i also wonder if my speedometer is accurate, my needle goes way down when i stop, like it looks like it lands on -20M/hr or something.

The main reason for this, is that the gas tank is sort of shaped like a 'V'. The gauge just takes the depth of gas in the tank. As gas gets lower down in the tank, it's used faster than at the top of the tank due to the smaller volume. Thus gas is used quicker. The half way mark is actually only 1/3 full.

My LT1 does it too... When I bought the car (well test drive), we saw the gas guage was on E so we headed to the closest gas station (a few blocks away), it died right before the turn in... We put 5 gallons in and it showed the tank was at 1/3 way... now when you fill up it goes a quarter past F.

mine does it kinda. Full is like 1/8th inch above F, and you can be driving down the road, and romp on it, and the gas gauge goes up, or slow down to a stop from highway speeds, and the gas gauge goes down lol.

if any of you guys ever change out gauges or anything, while you have the gauge cluster cover off, just pulll the gas gauge needle off, go fill the car up and put the needle back on so it sits right at F. now, when the tanks gets emptier, itll be a little closer to E than it was before.
