Castrol Syntec is labelled as a full synthetic, but it is really not, it uses a group 3 base oil, not a PAO/ester base like a real synthetic does.

Read here for more info on how Syntec is a ripoff:

Patman,

I am planning to go with Mobil 1 10W30, what filter do u recommend if I am going to be changing oil every 5000miles? Mobil1 or AC delco....also whats differnce between long/short filter?

Can short filter also last 5K miles? If not, how much can long filter hold?

THx

Go with Mobile 1 and Mobile 1 filter M206 (the long filter). It will hold more dirt thereby keeping your car cleaner. Since you live in Texas, you should use 10-30 oil and change your oil every 3,000 miles.

You can definitely go way longer than 2-3k on Mobil 1! Go at least 5-6k, since it's good to go way longer than that even (10-15k is a piece of cake)

The stock sized filter will last 5k, however the longer one will filter better since it's less of a restriction to oil flow so it goes into bypass mode less often (this happens a lot when the oil is cold or when you drive hard)
I'd go with the M1 over the AC Delco.

One of my friend is a chemical engineer and he recommended Amsoil, I'd switched from royal purple to Amsoil last year and so far so good, the oil still look fresh at 7000 miles, oil consumption problem had dropped, only used 1qt every 3000~3500 miles, I use 5w30 and oil pressure always stay close to 60psi, Amsoil said it could last 25K miles but I changed mine at around 15K, it's like $5.50/qt here which is same as Mobil 1, so I think it's pretty good deal but don't know why not many fbody folks use the Amsoil tho.

I changed my oil and filter after the first 2000 iles.I use Moble 1 5W30 and stock GM filter.I plan on going with the longer one next year.My car has the sensor for the oil. That is supposed to tell you when to change it.In the manual it says if you do not put alot of miles on the engine. You should change it at least once a year? What do you guys think?
