Default Unusual Window Issue

The passenger side wondow of my 99 SS is acting very strange. I've read posts about the regulators being kinda crappy, so up to this point I just dealt with them being slow. However recently the passenger side window will go all the way down, but only come back up a sort distance. Letting it sit for a while, and pressing the up button results in another short rise from the window. The distance it goes up seems dependent on the amount of time between presses. I haven't taken the door panel off yet, but I was wondering if anyone had heard of this issue, had any suggestions, or warnings about what I'm getting into. This is seriously cramping my ability to take the T-tops out because I don't want to spend the extra 20min rolling the window up when I get to my destination. Anyway, I'm probably gonna take action this weekend.

I would assume you have the bad window motor like 95% of all other LS1 owners. Just change it out with something that has a warrenty, that way when that one goes bad, you can get another free.

There's all the info you need right there!! What happens to the motors is they get too hot and have to cool down before they'll go up any more. That's why they'll go up a little after sitting for awhile, the longer the sit the further it'll go before it overheats and pukes again. Use the write-up Zymosis posted, it's pretty easy.

Thanks for the links and information. It seems like an all-to-usual repair. I think that will help nicely. Any idea what motor is a good cross between reliability and price? My little bit of searching has uncovered quite a few choices.

Go pick up a window motor from your local autozone. They're inexpensive (~$50), good quality (faster than stock) and come with a lifetime warranty so if it ever goes bad again you'll get a replacement for free.

Yeah this is the CLASSIC GM problem that every F-Body owner has had or will have one day in their lives. My driver side started doing that when I first bought the car... now it doesn't work at all. Eventually, this is what will happen... the periods that the motor must rest between use gets longer and longer and eventually, the motor completely stops working and dies... do yourself a favor and leave the window up and don't move it, because there is a chance the motor can die when the window is still open, and you certainly don't want that. I recently puchased a window motor from autozone, I'm going to install it soon. But, now my passenger side one is starting to overheat and enter the early stages of window motor death... so, it looks like I'm gonna have to be dishing out another $50 for another motor soon .

Theres a new fix to replace the thermal strip which causes these problems... Ive bought brand new Window motors after the AC Delco one year old ones that were put in by the previous owner crapped out on me, the new ones are still slow...

Chevy makes a nice car but they don't know a damn thing about window motors! I've had 3 Camaro's with them and 3 bad motors, drives me nuts. My drivers window is up now and the new motor is sitting there waiting. I also drive a SS, but in all fairness, my 89 TA had them and they died too.
Just a word of caution, make sure that you properly block the glass up, it can cause major damage if it drops on body parts.

replacing them is gonna be a pain if you haven't done it before though...not to discourage you or anything....it's not super hard or anything like that, but you will have to drill out the old rivets, unless it's been done before. and then contort you hand to get the new nuts and bolts in. i did mine myself and i was a window motor virgin, LOL. it wasn't REALLY bad, but kinda tricky if you haven't done it before.

IMPORTANT!!! --- make sure you have something to hold the window up after you take the motor out or the glass will fall and shatter!!! i shoved a pringles can between the inner door skin and let the window rest ontop of it.

Follow the send link in my post above, and you will be perfectly fine. It is a bit tricky, but once you get in there, you will understand / see what needs to be done.

a really good idea while youre in there is to grease up the regulator track with some white lithium. i did it on one of my windows and got lazy and didnt do it to the other. well now one is fast and nice, the other just creeps up.

I took my time being careful and was done in about 1.5hrs. The motor cost was about $55 w/ full warranty - as expected. It seems a little louder than stock. However, it works perfectly, and it is certainly quicker. The links and info were very helpful (especially in locating the rivets for drilling). Thanks again for the help. That one wasn't too bad, and now I can take the T's off regardless if it will rain later that day!

PS. If you get a phone call while putting the door back together, don't forget to plug the speaker back in. It's a bit of a **** off to go back because you forgot it (even if you only get as far as the door panel when you realize).
