Default Why do T-Tops leak?

I just bought A Trans Am and so far, it hasn't yet been out in the rain. However, I've heard horror stories about leaking t-tops and carpet getting soaked. How can I prevent this from happening before I learn the hard way? I guess to better understand how to remedy it or prevent it, I should learn where the problem areas of the t-top weatherstripping are first. Are there specific weak points I should look out for before taking it out for a spin in the rain?

Oh and I could start a new thread for this but why bother:

Can someone recocmend a good outdoor car cover for me? I'm storing this thing outside so I need something that will protect from UV rays and will keep it safe from the elements (all but snow since we dont have that in North Carolina).

I rub a light coat of silicone grease all over all of my weather stripping every other oil change. Your owner's manual recommends you do this every 6 months. I drive a lot and live in Houston where the climate gets really hot and wet a lot so I do it more often.

There are just too many seams with rubber going every which way and direction to always keep a perfect seal. That's why T-tops leak. Attention to detail is not a characteristic known to be synonymous with most GM products, our cars are no exception, and a little bit off can let a lot of water in.

You can also help by paying close attention to the rubber around the seams when you put the t-tops back on after they've been off. Make sure nothing overlaps where it shouldn't or gets folded under something else.

Great, I never would have thought to even read up on using silicone grease.

What does that actually do to help, though? Just prevent cracking I assume?

The grease keeps the stripping from drying out and cracking which will cause leaks. It also keeps them more pliable and springy to they seal better. And water hates grease. If there's a thin, even coating it's harder for the water to get in.

I had ttop leak, put in my sfc and the leak stopped.I use Mother vinyl protectant on all the weather stripping and open my door when I roll up the window.I'm trying to save wear and tear on the stripping and cheap *** window motor.
