Just drove my moms 99 TA and hers did the exact same thing! Anyone got any suggestions? It is not a metallic sound. It is a raspy/popping sound. My girlfriends thoughts were that there is a piece of paper in the engine

Arrghhh!!! Seems like all us Texas guys are having this "pinging" issue. One thing that did help for me was cleaning the MAF elements and then resetting the computer. Don't know if one or the other made the difference, but my pinging went away. I do have a catch can by the way.

Yeah, missouri heat sucks.
So it wasnt the heatsheilds or 02 sensors that made the noise?
BTW are you on FAST?

i wonder if the colder plugs affected my na performance though.. seems more like a bandaid covering the wound instead of fixing the problem.

Yeah I thought about that too. Did you try the stock temp plugs? I mean what else would cause of this sort of detonation? I immediately think that new plugs and maybe even wires should be installed.

I know the oil vapor from the PCV system can cause this high rpm detonation but I have already installed a home-made catch can that is working quite well by the looks of it. I have a nice puddle of oil in the bottom of the glass after only 3 days of driving.

What else? Carbon buildup? I doubt it. Even if we seafoamed our cars the problem would eventually come back if carbon buildup is the culprit.

So even if colder plugs are a "bandaid", IMO it is the best fix for us, to my knowledge at least.

good point. well the only other thing i know of is to delete your pcv system all together, but then you will have to get a breather oil cap and that leads to the oily **** all over your engine bay.. i had one on my old ford truck and it was fairly messy. it didnt have detonation though, i just didnt like the pcv lines

all i can say is try it. colder plugs seem to have done the trick for me. goodluck to you dude.
