Just get a new cap/dipstick assembly from the dealer.
GM part number is 10188034, unless they changed it recently. Should be about $10. No biggie.
Anyway, the correct fix costs about $10 and takes all of 30 seconds. There is NO reason not to fix it right....

I will not hurt anything to unplug the sensor. It is 3" below your radiator cap. electrical tape it up and zip tie it out of the way.
