Default Service Engine soon light??

The Service Engine soon light just came on last night when I was drivinig down the freeway. What does that mean? It has been extremely well maintained since I bought it and it only has 48k onthe odometer right now. What should I do?? Is this bad?

My guess would be to find someone with a scan tool and see if a code was thrown. Try advanced or auto zone. Even if its well maintained, something could always go bad for the hell of it. Hope its nothing too big. by the way nice Z

Yepper, get the code read. Even if it goes back off it'll still be stored.

Around here all the auto zone's read codes for free. Write down the code and post it - depending on who reads it they might just tell you it's a "bad 02 sensor" without the code it's meaningless.

The one autozone uses will give you the code # AND it will tell you what it is right on the screen. I had a SES light pop up on the freeway.. it was the "Throttle Poistion sensor.. read Low voltage"... I cleared the code with the autozone reader.. it has since never came back on..

Definetly get the code read and then post what it is, someone will be abel to help. Betetr yet try searching for the code. I wouldnt be too worried, its most likely an o2 sensor or something, the light is juts the egines way of telling you something small isnt right.

Go to Autozone or find someone with a scanner, after they plug into the connector under the dash the tool will give you any codes - like P0307, P0420, etc. It'll tell you what's going on. Write them down and post the codes for help.

if the light goes out, the code is gone. on older cars pre obd2 the codes stayed even after the light went off. you have to scan it when the light is on or the scanner just says "no codes found" . i have the same scanner they use, it was only 100 bucks on sale(normally 150)

My "service engine" light had come on and it was my EGR sensor. I.E. Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Those things start to clog up with carbon after so many miles. You can sometimes get lucky like me and pull it off, get a wire brush and nitrosolvent and clean the ever lovin' **** out of it. Hook it back up and be good to go. If you take the car to Auto Zone they can scan it for free and their scanner will let you know what code it is. Then if they don't know what the code means, you can go to your local Pontiac dealer and they can tell you.

Really? Probably depends on the scanner. Picked P0131/P0151 02 sensor codes and looked it up in helms - "Current DTC last test failed clears when the diagnostic runs and passes. A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported...related diagnostic."

that might be the case. perhaps the better (snap on or such) scanners can read the memory vs. the regular stuff. the advance scanner works well but at 100 bucks im sure there is stuff it cant do that the others can.

Default Check Engine Soon Light

I have a 2002 Z28 LS1. The check engine soon light came on and I used a meter to check the sensor codes. Nothing showed up and I cleared it. A week later it came on again, and again I checked the sensor code and nothing. Has anyone ever encounter this? Since no codes are showing up, what would be my next step.

Go to autozone and throw the guy a $10.00 bill and get him to read the code and clear it. I have the dealer books so if you post the code number we can tell you what it is.
