service engine light help!

Hey guys, I got a 2002 ls1 T/A I can't remember what the exact code was but it was for a bad cat converter on the driver side(at least thats what the GM reader said) Do I just replace the Cat? My gas mileage seemed to have dropped significantly as well. I hate service engine lights!!

P0420? Stock cats are covered for 8yrs/80K under the federal emissions warranty. Read the code again and post it.

Leave the code stored and contact your local dealer for a free replacement.

I wasn't the original owner, I bought the car with 34k on it at a dealer who wasn't GM specific. Would that dealer be responsible for it still? Ive got 45k on the car now and the warranty that came with the vehicle is up.

Cat converters are covered 8ys 80k miles regardless of ownership of the vehicle. But if it a faulty O2 sensor causing a bad reading, that most likely is not covered.

99% of the time if you get a P0420 its a cat...at least in my experience. A said above, catalytic converters are covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever comes first) regardless of ownership.

Actually emmision coverage covers more! If there is a component that causes a cat. to go bad they will cover the cat and the faulty component. I just replaced a PCM under emission waranty not too long ago on a customers car, also. Before that I replaced a MAF and 2 cats! LOL.
