Default Really need help starting...

So i go to work and come back when i got off and the car is acting funny.

It turned and didnt stay on. It would only stay on after the crank if I gave it gas, it emitted black smoke from the exhaust, after about 30 seconds it cuts out and dies.

Car is still in the damn parking lot :\
(its a 99 v6 firebird)

Any ideas?

It can be a number of different things. Its hard to diagnose a car from a description. Are there any other thngs thats its doing? Does it fun real bad when its running, or does it idle fine and then just suddenly die?

It could be a fuel pump, something in the ignition, lots of stuff.

I got it home from work but it was running extremely weird.

All i can really say it does is that it cranks, gives all the sounds of it starting up, and cuts off. Sometimes when I start it and put my foot on the gas immediately itll stay on but shoot out black smoke, and eventually cuts off.

My father is saying it could either be the distributor cap, which i cant find any pics or anything online, a sensor problem, or the fuel filter.

Check fuel pressure...I'm guessing you have a fuel problem by what you are describing.

It was the MAF sensor... i never would have guessed it, thought it had to do w/ fuel since the black smoke.

375 dollars to fix.

damn!
I wish I would have read this thread earlier! The old MAF probably wasn't even shot. Sometimes they just need a good cleaning. A can of CRC electrical cleaner is less than $10! Did the guy give you your old MAF Sensor?
Sorry to hear that dude. At least the car's running ok now, though.

Just make sure you have a good air cleaner in or else your new MAF won't last very long either.

yes, air filter. Sometimes I call it a cleaner. A K&N is a good filter and lasts a long time. However, I've had some trouble on one of my cars that has the K&N filter in it (91 SHO). If you don't keep it charged, it looses its filter capability and lets a lot of dirt in. I've had to clean the MAF sensor every other week because of it. Do yourself a favor and get a K&N recharge kit and follow the instructions. I have to do the same thing on my SHO, Durango, and my FZR.
