SES light - running lean

SES light - running lean i have a 96 A4 Z28 with a SES that says lean condition, just wondering if your car has ever thrown that code and what you did to fix it, i know my car has the problem whre you cant put gas in sometimes, only other thing it ever does is backfire sometimes while downshifting, and once it died as soon as it started up (it was very low on fuel) but started right back up and its only done it once

I had the same thing happen to me. Here is what I figured out to be the problem. I took my car in the shop and had it put on the computer. It threw three codes. 1 was for the security being enabled couple of time and the other was for the right bank running lean ( i.e. catalytic convertor) .Other than the SES light the car was running fine. I had the shop clear the codes and here is what I think happened. The security enabled because I didn't have the key sitting properly in the switch. When this happens the resistor on the key doesn't register causing a security enabled code. When the security enables, it kills the fuel to the engine causingit to run lean. When the fuel mix runs lean it sends the wrong mixture to the catalyitic convertor yet throwing another code. I had the codes cleared and have been really careful about my key in the ignition and haven't had a problem since. It sure beats replacing the cats.
