Its really easy to get off if you take the battery out. I have the samething going on right now, pulled the plug cleaned it with a brush put it back together and filled it, still on. ugh I don't want to buy a new one.
Anyways, does anyone have the part number?

no.
just the power steering cooler. it is just a pipe in the upper radiator hose (at least it is on the 98). look for oily slime in the coolant and on the sensor. also look for power steering fluid loss. completed my diagnosis by using a radiator pressure tester (free from autozone) and watching the bubbles appear in the power steering resevoir. replaced the power steering cooler, flushed the cooling system and power steering system, cleaned the coolant level sensor and problem gone. I can't get with the "just unplug it" way of thinking.

have you done anythign to drain the fluid recently? Or did it get low once and then you fill it?
I dunno about the LS1, but with the LT1, if you drain the radiator for anything, they say it takes 5 or more heat-up / cool-down cycles before the sensor will read correctly. And that's about dead on... everytime i've ever worked on my LT1, its a week before the thing shuts off ...

Mine turns on after about 10 minutes of driving and stays on for no apparent reason. Just a bad sensor. I'd replace the sensor just to be safe though so that when you do blow a hose or something you'll know.
