Default Spun Bearing(s)?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3sdg...page=1&t=t&f=b

took this video this morning before i went to work(i had the cutouts open the prvious day, so hearing this was impossible). Sunday went on a cruise and roll raced a 03 Cobra, as i would have shifted to 5th(not to race, no racing in 5th), the car shut off @ ~120mph. yikes. i've been having alternator issues lately so i thought it finally died on me. wasnt the case, it cranked back up(clutch depressed so the rpms were not up high) and i could see my oil psi now dropped to ~20-22psi. i slow down and ease it a few more miles home ~ 6pm. as it sits til 10 pm i crank it back up, oil psi comes back up to right around 40psi. fast forward to this morning and the video, in the video oil psi comes up to about 45-50psi now, but makes that god awful noise that im hoping it is not.....an oil starved bearing.

anybody?

Does the knock get louder or quieter with higher RPM'S? What about cold vs. hot?

There also seems to be a squeaking that I can't make out in the video.

P.S. I've always thought your camaro is one of the best looking I've ever seen. Well, for a few months at least.

i'm gonna go with cracked piston or broken lifter. it sounds like either the infamous LS1 tick or piston slap on steroids. i think either could kill your oil psi, correct? i know the pistons in the LS1 are weak, so if you cracked one, i wouldn't be surprised if you have an 11 second car.

it is not rpm related, which has got me stumped. i originally felt this vibe/(i hate to say it) slight knock through the shifter. trannt shifts and engages fine, its been goen through before and never gave me probs. sitting in the car and feeling it on the shifter, and standin in front of the car and feeling it on/in the intake, i cant tell where its coming from or if its even internal.

wouldnt a cracked piston lose compression and barely run?

Spun bearings usually change with rpm.

your oil psi will usually follow a pattern to....just not jump around...

sounds to me it is barely running and trying not to die. you probably wouldn't directly notice a compression drop. you'd just feel a loss in power - which i'm sure you wouldn't know since i doubt you dared to go WOT with that noise!

did you do a compression test? that would be an indicator of a cracked piston. i'd put my money on cracked piston or broken lifter.

honestly, i don't know what a cracked piston sounds like. all i know is, it sounds like piston slap on steroids. that's what i'm basing my guess on.

well, its a F13/ported head combo, they are kinda finnicky at first start, especially at 7am, with a/c on, and a weak Alternator. it surges a lil.

i have been at work all day, no time to look into it. im hoping i can limp it around the corner and get a better opinion/analysis tomorrow. luckily i have a truck to drive from work.

i appreciate ya'lls time and ideas, keep em coming.

any cracked piston damage would cause the engine to run extremely roughly and would make a knocking sound as it would have no compression in that cylinder and would probably smoke out the oil cap. The oil would also be contaminated with fuel. Not to mention the SES light would blink like mad from the engine not running correctly.

If a bearing was spun, oil starved or damaged, the noise you get will change with RPM. Actually any valvetrain damage would also create a noise that changes greatly with rpm.

It sounds to me like a belt or something outside the engine.

lol. actually i didnt. his heat soaked car made 455rw after ~20 pulls and an hour and a half on the dyno. he got me by a car, if that. I also got jumped and lost to a H/C/geared/355 lt1 on a 150+ shot by about a car and a half. it wasnt exactly a good day.

Maybe I missed it but is there any SES lights on? Kinda sounds like something outside the engine. From the video it sounds almost squeeky.

I recomend verifying exactly whats wrong and fixing it. prolly way cheaper than a built motor by a company

I agree, i think it would be time well spent, rather than just saying bad motor, you could get out a lot cheaper than running out and buying a 408. But, if you want a 408 and have the money, then more power to you dude. Good luck.
