Default constant overheating but it's not boiling over.....

hey everyone i got a weird prob....i have a 2001 SS and my temp gage reads around 220.....the thing is it doesn't boil over and also i can be sittin at a light and the temp gauge will drop back down to normal..... it doesn't sound like a head gasket to me although i could be wrong...any suggestions would greatly help...

Don't be too concerned with the temp gage. On the '99+ cars, it usually sits at 210 once the car is warmed. It's a dummy gage that doesn't show much change in temp.

But, if it's sitting higher than 210, you may have an issue. The only way to know for sure would be to hook up an OBD scanner and read temp from the PCM. This will be an exact reading.

PS. With stock fan settings, it's entirely possibile to see 230* coolant temps while idling in traffic. But even at 230, your dummy gage should still show only 210.
