I had a head gasket go out on a 93 Taurus. It constantly overheated, leaked antifreeze from under the head, and blew smoke out the tailpipe. It was a giant PITA to fix it too.

Buying a car with a messed up head/gasket isn't something I would ever do, but if it's cheap enough and you have the time and patience, go for it.

oil in coolant, coolant in oil, steam show out the tail pipe etc... Do a leak down test. BTW how cheap is cheap? Does the price reflect the repairs needed?

Personally I would find a cheap car that I could drive without having to fix it first. A 99 neon with a cracked head wouldn't be worth much IMHO
