I went to autozone and they said its the same for most cars except for Honda. I also read in the owners manual and I diddnt see anything that said it needed any specific type.

I went to my auto store too and they said Honda was the only one that use specific fluids. I bought Valvoline Power Steering fluid, and just added it in. The guy also said I could use the stores brand but I got the valvoline for piece of mind.

Yup.

You can get some with stop leak in it if you have a slight leak, but otherwise it's just brand loyalty.

I think Valvoline makes a high mileage version.

Any issues with using synthetic ATF for the PS?
I want to fix a small leak and flush mine. I am not sure if using a synthetic ATF is Ok versus just regular ATF in the power steering.

I've had either Redline or Royal Purple p.s. fluid in there for the last 6 years. I think it has actually helped the pump live to the ripe old age of 7 years/100K miles!! I use the "turkey baster method" of changing it every year-year and a half.

You can use ATF in GM cars. I've done it in my 93 1500, (171,xxx) and 98 Z with no problems, ever.

OK, I'm glad I found this thread. My power steering popped a hose last night and emptied my steering fluid all over the parking lot.

It's an easy fix, but I was very concerned about the fluid I can use as the dealerships aren't open on SUnday.

So, ATF is fine to use. Just the regular stuff, or is synthetic ok?
