Temperature Guage Crazy

I have a 2000 z28 automatic....the car has 80,000 miles on it but runs great. Recently the temperature gauge has been shooting up to the red zone for bried periods (5 sec) then it comes back down to normal 210. It happens randomly and I cant figure out why. I think it may also be causing my power steering fluid to come out of the top of the lid. Any ideas of what the problem may be?

wow lol. 2000 cars had a dummy temp guage and only shows an voerheating condition. are you sure the car isnt actually voerheating?

Say what--where did you get that? Mine works like it should.

Your sending unit might be on the way out.

The '99 and up gauge just doesn't reflect the actual temp - once warmed up shows more of a "range". If you're not overheating check the ECT sensor, connector and wiring by the #1 plug in the head.

Im not sure if it is really overheating, if it was why would it only overheat for 5 seconds? The guage goes all the way up until the check engine light goes on, the engine fan turns on, then 5 seconds later the temp goes back to 210. Unless told otherwise I am gonna change the temperature sensor hopefully that will do the trick
