Default synthetic oil question

I am wanting to change from regular oil to synthetic. Can I simply just switch oil? I remember hearing from some one that when you are over a certain amout of miles you cannot switch to synthetic. Is that right?, or is it prefectally safe just to switch to synthetic. (might be a dumb question but i just want to make sure)

also what are some good oil filters, any to stay away from?

thanks.

with that number of miles on your car you may experiance valve trane noise and other mechanical noises and maybe just maybe you will use more oil.If you had started the car at say 50,000 miles then you would be set.
Maybe use the high milage oil at this point.

The Valvoline MaxLife is a really good conventional oil although getting up to the price of a synthetic.

You can switch to synthetic at any time and if you have a mechanically sound engine that has been taken care of regularly thoroughout its life you should see no issues.

Well ive only had the car for about a year, and only put about 5k miles on it and have no idea how the previous owner treated it. Ill just play it safe and stick with the conventional oil. Thanks for the info!

I second tthe idea if trying the synthetic oil. It has many good advantages over conventional oil. Should your engine start to use the synthetic oil in excess, you can always go back to conventional oil. If it were me, I would try a quality, name brand of synthetic oil. You have nothing to loose and possibly a lot to gain by just trying a synthetic oil.

IMO anything over 50K should be considered higher mileage engines.

For those in cold climates synethic will make for much quicker and easier startups. It flows very well in the cold, unlike regular oil which becomes considerably thicker.

Synthetic oil can be used with no harm, regardless of mileage. Of course, there are other oil options for your high-mileage car besides full synthetic-but running the synthetic oil will not "hurt" anything.
