Default Ah Crap! Green Coolant!

I had my car at the shop a few months ago. I don't drive it very often, so I haven't been crawling around in it much. The other day I was going to take it for a cruise. I opened the radiator cap and saw GREEN COOLANT!!! Apparently the "race shop" has never heard of dex-cool. I am going to flush it, but I'm just curious as to whether or not the green coolant damaged anything. Any ideas?

well, it is not supposed to be there because green eats ALUMINUM...flush it and add Dexcool or Prestone/similar Orange coolant.

I've been using the prestone that will mix with either one and it's green. I agree that Dexcool tends to gum some things up (like my overflow, looks like it's full of mud, the cooling system looks new inside, it seems to oxidize when it mixes with air and turn to goop).

The green stuff is fine. They had aluminum blocks/radiators long before Dexcool and the world did just fine. I wouldn't run out and change it.

I'll never put Dexcool in a car. That stuff turned into a gel inside my radiator. I"m sure that was also the cause why I had to replace my waterpump at 45k miles.

My waterpump started leaking at 48k miles and was replaced at 65k or so. I can't say that I blame the dexcool, but it does seem pretty early to have one fail.

Most all modern green coolants are aluminum compatible. The only thing Dexcool may have over them is some extension of useful life. I do my coolants every two years anyway, so it doesn't matter.

yeah i'm running green coolant in my car. Going to keep it my car as well. Just need to keep on top of it, and keep it changed every so often. Not like it is that hard to do anyhow.

There was so much of a "gel" buildup I could hardly get the radiator cap off when I first got my car. The shops I went to get an estimate to flush the system all said the Dexcool will create the "gel" stuff.

NO Modern GREEN coolant is safe for ALUMINUM...Read the labels..the ORANGE is fine....maybe some sponsor can speak up...Nothing wrong with Dexcool..just don't leave it in for years.

What about GREEN extended life coolant. Green coolant is perfectly acceptable in your car as long as they did not mix the two coolants together. How many miles are on your car? I would not reccommend replacing the coolant in a vehicle with over 60,000 miles because they are different chemical make ups and the seals are broke in for whatever has been there to that point.

What does that have to do with anything ? They have been using dex-cool in most gm vehicles since 95. Guess how many lawsuits there have been against it. Yet they still use it. It is good stuff if you are willing to keep an eye on it. The "goo" some people have described does not occour overnight. It does that because of exposure to air example ... bad radiator cap, cracked radiator tank, water pump leaking. ...
