i was just wondering if you guys have this problem? before every oil change i am about a quart low on oil. i dont have black smoke or anything. i dont have a leak. i cant figure out where it is going. any tips or is this normal? thanks.
You are burning it, and yes this is normal for the LS1. Some say that switching to a 5W-40 or GC 0W-30 oil can help with the oil consumption. Catch cans are also an option.
I'd watch it and try not to let it get low. Now that you know, check it from time to time and add a little. I usually change it and put 6 quarts in, then I might have to add 1 more (or so) before the 5k oil change.
When does oil consumption usually begin in these LS1's. I'm approaching 100K miles and I have no consumption at all! I think the old lady that had my car before me has somthing to do with it

Either it does or it doesnt. There is no "start time" Some use it off the show floor, some dont. Run ANYHTING but mobile one 30 or lower weight, lol. M1 is a very thin oil. Only use their 40 weights. I run 10-30 Syntec and am at 900 miles and not a DROP missing.
I know this sounds obvious but are you SURE you are putting in 6 quarts when you change it.
I'm guessing you meant me. Uh, yea, I buy 6 quarts and a short filter. I've always bought 6 quarts and a filter and I always lose oil (typically 1.5 quarts in 5k). I've done the 5 quart bottles and a "loose" quart (6 total), I've done a case of M1 (the 6 pack box) and I use it all. I've been changing oil for about 20 years now and I can assure you that I put 6 quarts in it each time. This isn't a one shot thing. I've got 81k on my car and bought it new. I've done a few LS1 oil changes and they are all the same (missing the same amount of oil, etc).
I can tell you that there is a layer of oil in my intake where it gets sucked into the PCV and it burns it that way. I have a 2002 which have different rings in them (I think 2001's do as well) to help elminate the ring flutter issue that caused some of the oil burning in the early cars (as well as the PCV, it was a case of both of them were the issue).
