You will get a lot of mixed replies to that.

Its like the German Castrol Vs Mobil 1 threads on wich is better.

Or the people that just go to lighter weight oils, some have issues.

I don't really know much about them but I stick with Mobil 1.

The manual says to use 5W-30 oil. Amsoil is expensive but as far as I am concerned it is the best of oil one can buy. I belive that Amsoil was the original synthetic oil.

My car is rattling when you rev it after 6 months with M1 10w-30. My manual says 5w30 or 10w30. I am hoping to switch to something different and stick to it. I bought the car 6 months ago and he used castrol syn 10w-40 he thought but he also said he used the weight in the book. So I don't know. My mechanic says the M1 syn is too thin.

m1 is pretty thin....all synthetics arent the same....like i said when you go with one you need to stay with it, esp if its working well

also have you change your fuel filter lately?, a clanking could be because of dirty gas when revved

I changed it 6 months ago. That is funny you say that because I am having a performance problem after getting a tank of gas after I let it get down to the E which I never do. I feel like I have lost some power. I am getting a fresh tank today. The car has been running great up to that. I didn't know the fuel could have anything to do with that. I will let you know. I may have to get the BG service at the dealer. I hate to spend the money on that since I am not 100% sure that is the performance problem. Car has 52,000 miles.

letting the tank run down has several ramifications involved...one...theres alot of **** at the bottom of tanks, and you just let that get sucked into the system which leads to the other problem, is that its not really healthy for your fuel pump....having **** pumped into it and also having to work harder since your tank is low....

You will not have a problem with any oil that is used, it is the protection of each oil that you should be concerned with.

Recently there was an excellent thread over at BITOG that shows how well the AMSOIL 10w-30 has been working in the LS1. 5000 miles with some racing and very little wear. Now that is something to judge an oil by.

There's nothing wrong with Mobil 1 that can't be fixed by going to their 40 weight oils. You can get it at practically any parts store. Wal-Mart no longer carries anything but the 30 weights in my area.

German Castrol has produced the best wear numbers but is hard to find in most areas.

Thanks for the info. Some people freak out when you say you are going to put a 40 weight since GM says 30. I just want to do the right thing.

As far as letting the tank go down, I never let it happen but this one time I was in a bad neighborhood and it was late at night so I drove home with the check gauge light on. What do you think would be the best thing to do now? BG in the tank or full service at the dealer fuel injection? New fuel filter before or after the cleaner?

I have GC for 3 days. Oil pressure is dropping and the ticking is louder. I wouldn't buy again. RP or Amsoil, both perform well. I wouldn't get another 0w again though.

If you did not run the tank dry, you are probably fine on the pump. These car's check gauges light comes on at about 13.xx gallons in a 16.8 gallon tank. That means that if your check gauge light came on and you kept going, you could still go 15 ish miles (whatever you usually get city, but more because I bet you were babying it) and still have nearly 2 gallons in the tank.

With the stock pump or one that is fitted with the venturi like the stocker, You CAN drain the tank. So if you didn't run it dry, you are probably fine. And since you didn't mention pushing the car through a rough neigborhood, I guess you didn't run it out.

Get some good gas and run a tank through it and see if it keeps running roughly.

Run cleaner first and then do a filter again, if you want to.

I am running the fresh tank through now. I will see what that does. I did only drive about 15 miles really slow and babied it when I was low.
Thanks.

I switched to Amsoil 5-40 in the fall and although I have very few miles on it, the car seems happy. I have only put a total of 1000 miles on the car since I bought it, but after the oil change the oil pressure is up a bit (not too high) and the valve train seems quieter. I think any of the "quality oils" will work. Quality is a subjective measurement but you get the drift.

Thanks.
You probably did not physically damage anything then. Perhaps some crud got in there; that is not impossible, but unlikely. I have run like that many times without issue. Post up when you get through that tank.
