Default Oil Change from H***

So I go to change my oil for the first time today. I went with Mobil 1, bout a oil filter that looked good for the stock size that the books tell you (the ones you find at autozone, pepboys ect). I drain the oil go to grab the filter and it looks smaller than what i bought...MUCH smaller. The dimensions are around 2 3/4 by 2 /34. The one that I bought thats suppose to be stock is much larger and theres no way its fitting. I spent 2 hours finding one that fits correctly. The filter on there was a Valvoline Oil Filter said VO-58 on the side along with Valvoline...I tried to make it easier and ask the guys that work at the shops, every single person gave me the same damn thing... Valvoline makes oil filters??? Anyways back to my ?....why didnt the books tell the correct size? the firebird filter was closer to what my TA can take, but the hole with the threads was too small. It looks as if whoever redid my exhaust did true duals and had a clearance issue and swapped the whole filter setup out for a different one. What size is everyone elses filter? My cars a 1998 TA btw. Thanks

I'm not exactly sure what the dementions are on my filter, but I can tell you that the stock size is a M1-107 (from Mobil 1), and was originally a PF44 from GM/AC Delco, but when PF44 was discontinued it was replaced by PF46 from AC Delco.

Is it possible you got a filter for a V6? Something just isn't making sense... I would just run up to napa and get one of their filters. Part # FIL 1042

EDIT: Another thing, if you still have the old filter, you can get the numbers off of it and a store can cross-reference it for you.

I've had no problems with going by the book.

I eventually had them cross reference it. I tired the V6 as stated in my first post, it did not fit. I think the one I got that fits may have been the same size as my 1993 Silverado...or close to? oh well I guess I since i've got it figured out ill just call it good with these filters.
