Default cracked 2 starters

I'm getting frustrated with this problem. I've had 2 starters crack on me. They crack in the ear of the housing. What gets me is the problem basically started out of nowhere. The starter will work OK for a while and then crack. When it cracks it kicks the starter sideways and grinds. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but both times the motor has been cold when this happens. I would appreciate any suggestions. Also the motor is stock compression.

I never knew they needed to be shimmed, but how do I check the clearence to decide whether it needs shimmed? Thanks, Brian

Did you replace your first starter because of a crack? It's hard to beleive that there is a misalignment issue nowwa days. In the old days, cracking was caused by misalgnment or a misfire/timing issue.

I know they used to make flat shims. You can probably get some from a parts store. Since it works fine most of the time, I would go with a pretty thin shim to start with.

its been a while since i did one but after i install the starter you should be able to gently pry out the starter gear and check how it slides through flywheel or flexplate, it should slide right through with a slight clearance.

If while the starter is engaged and a piston fires out of time or sequence, it could cause the engine to kick real hard and break the starter. It doesn't happen much with today's better ignition and control systems.

I figured I had it fixed, but then again last night it snapped the nose cone off the starter. I'm not sure what is causing it. I pulled all of the plugs to see it was a head gasket leak hydrolocking the motor, but they all looked great. I've noticed they ussually break after the car has been sitting for a while and when it's cold out. I think this is the 4th starter that I have snapped recently. I wonder if a failing crank sensor could cause the wrong cylinder to fire at the wrong time or something. I don't think it's the starters fault or the starter engagement that's the problem, because sometimes it will last a month starting great then all of a sudden BANG and the starter cracks after turning the motor over a 1/2 turn or so. I'm frustrated about this.

I am going to check my plugs today, I am pretty sure I have water seaping from somewhere as the exhaust has the smell and steam. I hope the hydrolocking is the case. I will keep u informed.
