Default Powersteering whines in Cold Days

On some of the colder days like 40 degrees or lower my powersteering whines. Is that the rack causing that or is it the pump that is getting weak. I never lose powersteering I just cant stand the noise.

By the way if anyone knows of have a low mileage rack and pump I would be very interested in buying it.

Thanx ben

I have a pretty new belt on mine. I am pretty sure its not the belt squealing. Its definately the pump whining just like if you have air in the system and stuff. I was just kind of wondering if its the rack going out or the pump gettin weak.

"Morning sickness" a common cold symptom for P/S systems.
A fresh fluid change can help, but often times the rack must be replaced

I think you're on the right track with a change to synthetic. We sell a Power steering flush at work that does a pretty good job of it. It's basically a fluid change with some extra conditioners added. Does wonders on Ford and Dodge minivans that are notorious for the same symptoms.

I was having the same problem, last night i drove it fine, the pump just made noise until it got warm, after that no noise. Today i pulled it out of my garage and i have no power steering.

My DD, I put Lucas in the PS due to a leak, it thicker and actually gummed up the leak, during the summer its fine, if its below 32 degrees it whines like a bastard and it has hard to turn the wheel, the fluid isnt moving.

Every fbody ive seen has a issue with leakin out PS fluid, check it often, make sure it isnt low and whining on cold days shouldnt be a issue.

Yeah I have syntetic powersteering fluid and a Nichols teflon treatment in it. I have noticed that in the really cold days when i first start it up and if I turn the wheel its really stiff and has the typical "morning sickness" so I spose I will have to replace the rack and probably replace the pump also since crap from the rack may have gotten in it and dont feel like having to do it all over again in a few months cause the pump is out.

Do any of you guys know of a low mileage rack and pump for sale?

I have a brand new Monte Carlo and it is doing the same thing. I took it into the dealer today and they added some fluid and it did quiet down a good bit. There was a lot of bubbles in the fluid as well. We will see how bad it whines in the morning, it will be like 3 degrees out...
