Why a seperate a/c belt??
a/c compressors have a tendency to fail/lock up. When it happens, it will throw off your serpentine belt off which might cause an engine failure. Thus, GM decided to go with two separate belts.
On my 94 diesel Dodge truck, I always carry non-ac serpentine belt for the same reason. The underhood diagram even shows how to use a different belt to by-pass the a/c compressor. Otherwise, why did Dodge bother mentioning it?
How does this theory sound?

I have heard this as well.
