Question Why a seperate a/c belt??

Only thing I could think of is so that the a/c could be quickly disabled without the need for a specialty/shorter belt. Someone tried to tell me it's because a/c was only an option on our cars, but even if that's the case, it seems like they could have just sold those cars with a shorter belt instead of using a dual belt setup. Anyone have any thoughts? Just one of those things I've always thought about but never posted.

I understand that it makes it easy to remove the a/c, but I don't think gm did it for track runs.

It does make it easy tho. As for why i have no anwser. But i do know all ls based engines have a similar set up. So maybe the general could use the same parts and sell more belts

Here is my take on this:
a/c compressors have a tendency to fail/lock up. When it happens, it will throw off your serpentine belt off which might cause an engine failure. Thus, GM decided to go with two separate belts.
On my 94 diesel Dodge truck, I always carry non-ac serpentine belt for the same reason. The underhood diagram even shows how to use a different belt to by-pass the a/c compressor. Otherwise, why did Dodge bother mentioning it?

How does this theory sound?
