Default Thermostat replacement

I'm getting ready to replace the thermostat in my 1998 TA. I saw on install university that they drained the radiator before doing this swap. What i'm wondering is, is it a REQUIREMENT to drain the radiator. I'd much rather just unbolt the thermostat and swap the new one in if possible.

if you havent changed your coolant in a while it may be a good idea to start with fresh coolant, i think that you are supposed to change it every 10k or 20k or something like that. else its probably just so theres not any uncontrolled spills. if you drain your coolant level to below the thermostat you should be ok

When you pull of your hose, coolent will leak out anyway so you will have to refill/replace the coolent any way. So you might as well let it drain as you are pulling the T-stat and by the time your done is ready for new coolent.
