Default A/C, How much oil does it hold?

This is on a 1998 Z-28 camaro. The A/C service sticker under the hood is gone so I have no clue as to how much oil the system holds. Advance told me it holds nine ounces of oil but that seemed a little much, most I've ever fooled with only hold one 3 once can then about two cans of Refrigerant. Thanks for any help you can give!

I'm at work now, when I get home I'll look it up in a the Hayes manual, if they have that info in there.

Thanks. When we pulled the vacuum the system held about 30 pounds of pressure for over an hour. We then added three cans of oil with the short adapter straight into the low side port then added two cans of 134-A. It was blowing ice cold air for a while and the clutch was kicking on and staying on. What kills me is why it stopped blowing cold air, the accumilator wasn't sweating so I decided to take it off to see what was going on. We evacuated the system and pulled the Drier back off to notice it was full of oil. Almost acted like the compressor wasn't pulling the oil through the system. I bought the compressor from a member on here who stated it worked fine when they removed it. It feels tight and sucks air when the clutch is turned over by hand. Could we have added too much oil causing a clog or does it sound like the compressor is shot? Normally when adding Freon with a gage set it pulls down to about 25-35 pounds but mine didn't pull down at all which is why we had to shoot it straight into the system with a short adapter rather than through the gages. This thing has got me stumped! I might go ahead and buy a brand new compressor to see what happens but I'd like to make sure it's the problem before I go blowing money. Hope this didn't confuse anyone! Thanks!

I was under the impression that 2oz of oil should be added for every 1lb of freon. Is that not correct for the LS1 AC system?

The orifice tube could be clogged by debris. It's easy to change and is back by the firewall in the lines that come in/out of the evaporator. I recall having seen a picture in the past here on the site...you might be able to find it in a search. Replacement tubes are cheap. You could clean it, but I don't remember what to use and if you contaminate the system it could be very, very bad.

There should be instructions in boxes of new compressors. There were some in the box mine came in. Perhaps you could ask the nice parts guy to find one and let you peruse it.

Alternately, I found rules of thumb on the web for how much oil to put in a compressor. It varies with the problem.

That is definately too much oil. I would suggest replacing the orifice tube as well. They are only a couple of dollars. I dont really know how to suck out all the oil in there already. When I got my new compressor, i filled it with oil (3-4oz.) and added another 3 in the accumulator. Good luck.

The system holds eight ounces. If you did not flush the system and replace the orifice tube you are wasting your time and money.
