Default Help! car is stranded at autozone

Alright here's what happened leading up to the no start situation:

Last night i changed spark plugs and broke my coolant temparature switch doing so. Drove the car to auto zone this morning and had them try to sell me a "temp gauge sending unit", try to install it. didn't work obviously. So i reinstall my broke one with plans to try the next parts store, forget to plug in the plastic connector, attempt to start it with no luck. The motor cranks but no fire. I realized at the time that i forgot to plug it in so i do so, and still no fire.

Could the coolant that dripped out of the block got something wet and shorted something out?

or something else?

help please!!

You're talking about the temp sensor in the driver's side head right above plug #1, correct?

'98 use a different temp sensor than '99+. I wonder if maybe autozone only carries the sensor for the newer LS1s? Either way, I know you can get the part from the dealer, but this might not be an "in stock" item.

As for why it won't start, not sure on that one. Was the car giving you any issues the last time it ran?

Yup, 98 sensor is different, its 2 pin, not 3 like the 99+, even though they show it in Autozone as 98+ its really 99+. You will have to get it from a dealer and even they had an issue. If you look in the GM part number thread I have a post there with the correct 98 coolant sensor. Also, the reason the car isn't starting is your flooding the cylinders with gas, with the sensor broken your car will most likely be reading -34 * or something similar. It is dumping WAY too much fuel so it won't fire, and if it does it will idle very badly. What you need to do is get the right sensor, then get it in, turn the key to ACC then to off then to ACC a few times to prime the system and you should be good.

EDIT: The 98 sensor is 3 pin, not 2 like I said. They 99's are 2 pin.

Are you sure it's not the other way around? I'm almost positive that the '98 has the 3 prong, and '99+ is the 2 prong.....

Also, I bet you anything if you pop the hood after you've cranked it a few times it stinks like gas!

Trust,

I couldn't find your post in the part number thread, but here is the '98 sensor GM part number that I have in my records:

12551708

Is that the same number you've posted in the past? Not sure why I can't find your post....search must not like me today.

RPM WS6, I couldn't find it either, I know I posted it though. But I did some research and that p/n (12551708) is correct for the 98's. Apparently 2 of the wires are for the PCM and the other for the gauge, probably why ours are somewhat accurate.

it definetely was flooded, it fired right up when i put my foot to the floor when i cranked it. And as usual nobody has any 98 parts in stock so im gonna have to wait 3-5 business days for o'reilly's to get em in. sometimes i wish i would have bought a 99+ ls1...

Its no biggie, just dont start it without the sensor any more, and prime it, the last thing you want to do is wash down your rings!

EDIT: I'd go to gmpartsdirect.com and get it from them and get it shipped faster, you don't want any auto parts store to order it and get the wrong one.
