hey i was just out with my buddy who has a 2002 trans am ....we went to a dealership to have his car appraised (going to the corvette croud) ....they appraised it and on our way home the ses light came on my first thought was the dealership unplugged something to get us to come back...so we tried to take it to advanced auto to get it scanned.....well when we got there they hooked up the scanner and it wouldnt read...it acted like it wasnt plugged in.....so we went across the street to auto zone and the same thing....what could be wrong with it...both places it acted like the scanner wasnt hooked up...what do yall think?!?!

Check to see if the cigarette lighter fuse is blown, I am pretty sure the oboard diagnostic connector is on the same circuit.

Yea, I had a blown lighter fuse somehow and the same thing happened on my '02 Z.

wow that fuse is demolished....could this be throwing the SES code by any chance....he was upset and thought something big was wrong with the car....

im not positive, but im pretty sure there is a generic code that sets the SES light if there is a ALDL connector circuit fault

The cig light fuse doesn't throw an SES light...fix the fuse and see if you can pull any codes out of it after you have the scan tool communicating again.

got the fuse taken care of.....we scanned the car and got a p0420 cat inefficiency is there a recall on the cats for these cars? i thought i heard there was at one time....whatever the case is he is still in the 8 year 80,000 mile warrenty for the cats....may be a good time to go longtubes and ORY!....thanks for all the help....let me know what you guys would do

I'd go LT ORY if it was me..no sense in replacing a cat IMO. You can get a set of Pacesetters and a TSP ORY for pretty cheap anyway.

GM just extended the cat warranty to 10yr/120K on the 00-02 cars - leave the code on and have them replace it free - especially if he's selling it???

ya he got an appointment tomarrow morning sometime..they are going to go ahead and replace the cats....if i were him i would just replace the cats with new ones..then turn around and take them off and sell them....then buy LTs and TDs haha
