With a spray maf cleaner. You can use CRC maf cleaner or their QD electronics cleaner. Other people will use a qtip and rubbing alcohol but the spray seems a lot quicker to me.

Take Maf off the car. Spray it out with de-chlorinated brake cleaner.
Allow to air dry. Reinstall. This is how GM recommends it be done.

Default MAF cleaner

Took mine off and used spray brake cleaner. NOTE DON'T TOUCH THE FINE WIRES WITH ANYTHING. Let it dry in the sun for a half hour and replace. While it off use some spray throttle body cleaner in your TB. I had hesitatation and did this FIRST. Wound up replacing the 70K mile platinum plugs with 41-985 Iridiums gapped at .040 and new GM Red Performance plug wires. No hesitaton NOW. BIGHANK

Default plugs

My 98 C5 plugs were not too bad except for the last one in the rear of the driver's side. Got a $3.99 5/8 swivel spark plug socket from Autozone and used it after I removed the air and brake vacuum lines and tied them out of the way. Some vacuum hose various lengths over the plug after you loosen it will let you "feel" it out and then guide a new one in without crossthreading the plug. ALWAYS thread it in hand tight with your FINGERS or you might have a $1000 re boring job on your hands. BIGHANK

How dirty were your maf wires when you cleaned them, I just did mine today and they looked like they were encased in charcoal. I had to scrub at it very gingerly with a q-tip to get the stuff off of it.

I used electrical contact cleaner from Radio shack and a Q-tip. Detonation problem is fixed!

So youre actually touching the wires themselves with a Q tip? Arent they quite easy to break?

They look like they might be but I had no problems with them. If you have shaky hands maybe you wouldnt want to touch them. I had no choice mine were so dirty spray was having no effect.
