Sounds like the sending unit went out or you have a wiring problem. Go get a wiring diagram and check to see which ones are for the sending unit. Then get out a DVOM and check the resistance. If nothing is showing the you will have to drop the tank and get a new unit in there. If it does show then you will have to track the wires to see what happened and possible have the gauge checked out.

from what i can tell this is a very common problem with the fbodies.. i would check the sending unit out also

SOMETIMES the float gets stuck, and filing it up with a full tank of gas helps, so i guess it wouldnt hurt to try that also

ummmm righttt. I'm going to need you to come in on Sunday, too. We are trying to play catch-up. Take a look at this diagram if you get the chance.

Enjoy the diagram!

It not too bad if you stare at it for awhile...

and awhile....

Lol, gotta love the Office Space...

It may fix itself after a fill up. My gage is going, if i am stopped for a while it will drop to empty and will stay like that until i restart the car. As long as your trip odometer works you can just pay attention to that so you dont have to worry about running out of gas.

It does sound like the sending unit went out tho, its not fun to replace, but if you do drop the tank, get a nicer fuel pump while youre at it. You dont wanna drop the tank more than you have to.

Smile gas guage at zero

Many GM vehicles have problems with the gas guage suddenly going to zero due to high sulphur content of certin gasolines. Before taking off your gas tank and sending unit you may want to try using some Techron and/or Seafoam in several tanks full of gas. Techron is found in all grades of Chevron and Texaco gasoline as an additive. I have a 98 C5 which had the sendor in one of my 2 tanks replaced under warranty. A while later while driving the guage suddenly took a nose dive to zero with approximately 3/4 tank of premium gas (93 octane). I had to use several bottles of Techron to get the guage working again. It now reads only about 7/8 full when gas tanks are really full whereas it used to read SUPERFULL when filled. Try this FIRST. The sensors can be removed and cleaned with something like a pencil eraser (not too abrasive but will do the job). BIGHANK
