Default Newb with a problem, please help...

So i just bought a Trans-Am Saturday and everything seems good with it. 2000 T/A, 6spd, 52000 miles, stock aside from a flowmaster welded in. Well today was the first day i got to "play" with it and i think something may be wrong with my rear...

At a stop i drop the clutch at about 2.5g and i take off without a problem but i hear a loud "thump" when i drop the clutch.

I had the t-tops off and in the slots when i did it and thought maybe it was them moving around or something, but i'm a paranoid person and am worried.

Tires: Nitto 275/40/18 on 06 vette rims.

What you guys think? Is my rear goin out or is this common?

-Chad

Could be a lot of things. Could have been one of your ttops like you thought, your spare tire might be loose, could be one of your control arms, panhard bar, or torque arm loose, even though it sounded like the rear could still be a tranny mount like was listed, or it could be something broken in your diff. Get under and start trying to move things around with your hand. Or if you're bored, check that all the bolts under the rear are tight.

It may just be normal. Every Fbody I have ever owned has made a clunking noise if you let out the clutch the wrong way. Its not bad, just the car taking up slack in the trans, ds, and gears. I think there is something about it in the stickies, if not, Im sure search will pull up something

Thanks for the replies, I'll be taking it over to Thunder Racing up here in Baton Rouge on Sat to get some baseline dyno pulls, and i told them to beat the hell out of it

I'm gonna take it out tonight with my t-tops on, and i'll be sure to secure the spare tire. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

I beleive i figured out what the prob is... I beleive that the "clunk" i hear when i drop the clutch is wheel hop.

Today i added air in my tires (36psi) and when i took it out driving there was a shitload of wheel hop and the same "clunking" noise coming from the rear except it was many "clunks" lol.

I think the other night since my air was set low (25 ish), my tires grabbed really well with minimal wheel-hop which only produced one "clunk"

Hah, in fact, i didn't even know that these car were IRS. Ehh still learning, i'm coming from a 00 mustang gt (solid axle) to this, so you guys have to bear with me. This LS1 is a whole new experience for me...

IRS would have been pretty cool in these cars though, nice vette style rear. Probably be a lot more durable than these 10 bolt pos'ers
