Default metal shavings in AC system.

so last week my GF's AC stops working. i don't have a gauge so i just hook up the little can of freon like normal...

i notice that the can didnt get cold like normal, but after a few minutes the car starts blowing cold AC and i go my way.

the next day the AC is not cold again, so this time we take it to a shop.

i watched the technician test the pressure, and he commented that the pressure was a little high.

my girlfriend just called me and told me that there are metal shavings in the AC system and that it will cost $700 to fix.

my question is;

1) how does the AC system produce(closed system) metal shavings?
2) did i F the car up but "overloading" the system with to much freon?

The compressor is coming apart, the debris (shavings) from the compressor is blocking the orifice tube causing your high pressure. It would be pretty tough for you to have caused that problem by adding a little freon.

Goat is right on.

You will need to replace the compressor, flush the system of shavings, and replace other parts as necessary. You do not want the old shavings making their way to the new parts.

that also comes from lack of oil in the system. black death is what I have heard it called.

The compressor, orifice tube, and accumulator must be replaced. Additionally, because the condenser cannot be properly flushed, it must be replaced too. Flush the rest of the system.

What he said. i'm pretty sure it's 24 oz of freon and a can of oil, but double check that.

The 12oz. R134a freon cans come with oil already in them.
