Check Engine light????

Check Engine light???? The other day my check engine soon light came on so I made an appointment with my mechanic. But then a day later the light went off. And just today I heard a load noise from under the car while I was driving, like a spring poping or something, it didnt sound too good then the check engine light came back on.
It has made this sound about twice now, does anyone have any idea what might cause this?
