Default play in steering column

every f-body i've ever been in (which is only 4 but this can't be a coincidence) has a steering wheel that you can move up and down slightly. its not a big deal but still annoying. makes the car feel cheap. anybody have a fix for this?

Seriously, I would guess it is a tolerance issue in the parts. I would be up for retrofitting some other kind of steering column. or something...

If it was a wear issue GM does sell all the individual parts in the column.
