Default maintenance

I have 2000 LS1 Camaro 5.7Liters with automatic transmission. I change oil and water yesterday.
I must now change fluid and fliter inside transmission. Car is one owner with 90000 miles. I don't know maintenance. Can be original filter and fluid ?

So you are trying to change your automatic transmission fluid and filter? You have to buy it new,you can't use the original filter and fluid...sorry your English is a bit rough

Yeah if you are asking if can re-use your fluid and filter that would be a no.....kinda defeats the purpose of changing it. Also if you have no mechanical knowledge you might be better off letting somebody at a dealership or another mechanics shop take care of that for you.

Change just the filter and the fluid that comes out. Since you have no knowledge, let a shop do it.

Since you have no knowledge about doing this then take it somewhere to have it done.

I think what he meant is that it might still be the original fluid and filter in the transmission. Considering that the car has 90k miles, I hope its not the original fluid and filter.

sorry for the bad english, VIP1 is right. I don't know maintenance of car. I change transmission fluid and it is dirty, must be first fluid that came with car from factory.
I only drain 5-6 quarts, sure not all fluid comes out. Maybe I drive for weeks and change again ? Filter is cheap, $9 at store. Maybe change fluid and filter again ?

thank you
Dragan

It has much more than 6 qts. I think it's 12 or more for trans and converter.

You can do a Search on this topic and/or post in the Auotmatic Transmission section, too.

Auto trans should be holding way more than 6 quarts. If if you can find an instruction manual online, it will tell you how many quarts it holds.

This may be helpful:
http://shbox.com/pdf/manuals.html

Specifically:
https://www.mygmlink.com/pdf/go2cont...2000camaro.pdf

Check/add Auto Trans Fluid:
Start at page 6-20 in the manual, which is really page 271 in the PDF file.

Capacities:
Start at page 6-66 in the manual, which is really page 317 in the PDF file.

It says to use 5 quarts of DEXRON-III for a drain and refill in the Auto Transmission.

I'll admit that it may sound low, but that's what GM says is the capacity.

Thank you. I safe file to my computer.

The book says 5 qt for drain and refill and 10.8 qt for overhaul. Yes - 5 qt sound low but is not capacity. 5qt is what drains, rest of fluid stays inside trans or converter or radiator.

Where did it say 10.8 quart? I looked through the book before my previous post and posted what I found.

Found it... on the same page too..

Either way, since you did a drain and refill (instead of an overhaul), 5 quarts should be the right amount.

If the fluid you drained is the original, you should get the system flushed to replace all the fluid (10.8 quarts) instead of just half. I'd recommend a flush anyway.

the only way to do a full system flush is to take to a lube place where they hook tha machine up to it. the stock converter should hold at least 4 qts that you cant drain when pulling the pan

I would be cautious doing your first transmission fluid flush at 90,000 miles.

Dragan, how did the fluid look/smell? In other words, what condition was it in?

Cautious doing flush ? Why ?

Fluid is red and clear or transparent - not brown thick slime. I think this is good thing, still clean fluid.

Maybe I drain again 5 qt, install cheap $8 filter from AutoZone and drive 100 miles then drain again, and install expensive filter with again 5qt new fluid ... not sure.... I will see what fluid looks like when drain from pan. I bought $20 filter from Napa store and did not installed. I install cheap AutoZone filter. Have $20 filter for next fluid change.

If hes doing just a pan and filter he'll be fine.
