Water Pump Leaking

Water Pump Leaking i did a search for this and i still need a little help. i had to take my cylinder head off this past week. so i finally got everything back on and running. i went on a 4 hour road trip to see my wife and half way there my temp jumped up from the normal 180 to 210 and stayed there till i got 5 minutes from the house and it slowly started to go up to 240. so i turned it off and coasted. turned it back on and it was at 210. so i made it there. let it cool down and filled it up with coolant and drove about 10 miles and as soon as i parked i had a puddle under my car. i didnt know where it was coming from, so i did some searching on here, which lead me to check my waterpump and sure enough on the underside of my water pump there was coolant. so i know either way i will have to take it off. but how can i tell if the gaskets or the water pump itself is leaking. i mean it never leaked before. i had zero leaks on the car. so i think its the gasket. but how would i tell. fwiw when i pulled the pump off there was like an rtv sealent on it, not a gasket. im not sure if thats why it wasnt leaking or not. sorry for the lengthy thread.
Maybe I'm just old school, but a water pump should always have a gasket behind it unless the factory says otherwise. I'd replace the water pump just to be sure and then place a quality gasket on that thing. Actually, maybe don't even replace the water pump-I don't think that it could ever leak that much; a bad or non-existent gasket maybe, but not a pump...
