How hard is it to install power steering rack?
Just curious, i'm almost positive mine has gone bad and i'm looking to replace it. I'm trying to get a feel if it would be worth doing myself or should i just suck it up and pay a shop to do it (i know they'll charge alot)? Thanks.

I put a new rack in mine, and it wasn't all that tough. it gets kind of messy, but that comes with any job. the rack is only held in by 2 bolts, the tie rid ends, and the pinch bolt for the steering knuckle, and hydraulic lines at the box. you can either get new tie rod ends, or swap the stock ones out. don't forget to measure your toe-in (left/right)when unscrewing them. it was only like a 2hr job.
not that hard...if you have a lift....the steering knuckle and tie rod ends can be a hassle but other then that not that hard...power steering lines, steering knuckle, tie rod ends, and a few bolts...

flush the pump itself before re-installing the rack to the pump...generally when a rack or pump goes bad, little peices of metal can get into either or...and do damage so its good to flush the old part before installing the new

Ever since i've had the car, power steering has pretty much been non existent. After about a year and a half of driving it, the steering started to whine. So when we did heads and cam, we swapped the steering pump w/ a new one (we also took out the power steering cooler, thinking that perhaps it was leaking water into the pump causing the barf color). Well, it fixed the whine but the car still turns like a 59 Fleetwood. Flushed the system 3 times over a period of 2 weeks... same old same old. What else is left to do?
