Default Temp gauge jumping around?

Hey guys today I noticed that my temp gauge will shoot up to 260 and then come back down to a little below half way, then jump back up and come back down. What would cause this? Its an 2002 camaro z28.

Thanks

The temp gauge is garbage in these cars. It might as well be an overheat dummy light where the needle moves instead of a light coming on. Is the car actually overheating? It's most likely the coolant temp sensor or the guage cluster.
