Default Power Steering Flush for $125. wtf is that?

I went to have my oil changed today at my local chevy dealer. I had a line item on my bill called "courtesy inspection" and it recommended that I get my power steering fluid changed - and est cost is $125. My car is an 02 Z28 with 35,000 miles. Is this just some dealer scam for dumb people, or do these cars actually need it? I always thought that was something you did at like 100,000 miles.

that is really expensive for something that does not take even 10 mins to do! dont worry about it, just to be safe you can do it yourself by siphoning out all the fluid in your resoirvoir and fill it up new, that is not a complete flush but it will help out

Considering that most places I've seen charge about the same amount for a full tranny flush, which is much more involved and time consuming, yeah I'd say that's a tad high.

At what mileage does the manual recommend for power steering flush? Go with that.

Take a kitchen baster (like for basting a turkey or something), and suck everything up in the resoirvoir that you can get. fill it up a little bit befor the top, dont over fill it, and youll be fine, iv done this myself a few times on diff. cars

Turkey baster + siphon and replace fluid in resevoir + drive for a few days + repeat until you used the quart of fluid (or two quarts if you want to be meticulous)

They're just trying to sell you something.

$125 is outrageous. I used to work at a dealership and the power steering flush machine was a joke. It was basically two tubes, one that pumped in fresh fluid and one that sucked it out right next to it. You just ran the car and stuffed that thing in the reservoir, lol. You can do the same thing with $10 and a turkey baster.

Its simple, go to Dollar store, buy a turkey baster.Get an empty can, siphon out old fluid into empty can repeat until reservoir is as near empty as possible. Replenish reservoir w/CLEAN fluid run the car for a couple of days, repeat as necessary.
