Default Need help with repair/arcing coils?!

I have a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am because it was having a really bad idle problem, stumbling when accelerating. I took it to a shop and they told me it was due to arcing on the coils, 2 coils are bad and they need to be replaced. THey quoted me $957! Is this the right diagnosis and could i do this job myself? I really dont have a grand to pay for this to get fixed.

haha first off who told you that? Was it a reputable dealer or some Joe **** the rag man? Either way if it is a coil that could be solved by buying a set off a yukon or tahoe out of a local junkyard for cheap. Any SES light?

just some local shop around here, parents have been goin there forever. no ses light, just the idle dipping really low then back to normal and some hesitation/stumble at acceleration after the car gets warm

check the maf as well, you may have a piece of trash messing with everything, this has happened a few times with me. but coils are easy to come by at most junkyards

so if i just buy the new 8 replacement coils, its pretty much just plug and play? would the bad coil be a legitimate reason to the dip in idle and stumble? i figured it would throw a code and turn on the ses light

"One problem you might run into is buying coils that are on a bracket where as yours are mounted right to the valvecover because you have a 99."

Only the 98's are bolted to the valve cover. 99-02 are on a bracket.

"would the bad coil be a legitimate reason to the dip in idle and stumble?"

Yes, and it may not throw the code as you are experiencing.

yeah i was thinkin about that, mine are on the bracket. well thank you for the answer on that one, i did get the car back and sure enough the whole left side coil packs are sparkin like crazy, indication that they indeed need replacin?
Thanks for all the quick responses guys!
