Default Temp gauge not working, or overheating?

I've been noticing lately that my 98 Z28 gauge is reading hotter than usual, just little past halfway, well today it read almost till the red line, but when i popped the hood it wasn't that hot. So I flush the system and it seemed it read over 235 right away, even though the cap wasn't hot. So is it possibly that my gauge dont work, or is my engine really overheating?
