A/C Charging Question
A/C Charging Question I just bought some R-134 and was looking for the red/blue caps on the high/low lines and can't seem to find them......They were easy to find on my 2002 Firebird, but not on my 2000 Z28.
Thanks for any input.....Need to get a service manual in the near future.

What was the static pressure just putting the gauge on? Depending on the ambient temp should be around 95 psi with it turned off. Maybe it was completely empty and the low pressure is keeping it off. Probably not it, but there's a couple fuses/relay you can check.

OK thanks.......I bought it last year in the Fall from a dealership and can't remember if I ever used the A/C, so now I wonder if it even worked when I bought it? Buyer beware I guess.

I rented an A/C vacuum pump from Autozone. Just connect it to your high/low pressure ports, turn it on and once it's made a good vacuum in your system turn it off and take it back. Then just add the refrigerant. I've had to do this twice now and it's worked out fine both times.
you need to jump the ac compressor when you charge it..if you are charging it and it isnt kicking on then naturally it will not work. You can jump a relay but you can also jump the plug that is on the actual line..more towards the back somewhat by the computer. With the compressor running charge it with the air on..give it a few days if it doesnt work start looking for your leak.
Well.......A local mechanic said there is no refrigerant in the system, but also no leak - as they checked it with a vacuum.
I just filled it the other day (or thought so) with 134, but maybe it didn't take? I think I put about 1/2 of a 12 oz. can in, and it never got cold.
Try it again?
I'm trying to save the $89 they want to do the A/C service at the shop.

I just charged mine up.... it has not worked since I purchased it last September. I bought (2) of the large cans at Wal-Mart with the included gauge and it took both cans to get it charged up. It blows VERY cold now!! I am out of town and cannot remember what size the cans of r-134 were, but it was much larger than 12 oz., so maybe you just need some more. Just make sure your compressor is actually cycling...
As luck would have it......I filled the A/C with 2 cans of 134 and it did not hold - so there is a leak somewhere - even though a repair shop said the other day they vacuumed it and found no leak.
I guess I need to buy some of that 134 with the dye and check it out. If it is the compressor, I guess I am screwed out of a few hundred dollars.

. Best way to find the leak is have a good, reputable shop overcharge the system with nitrogen and use a nitrogen sniffer to find it. Also look for dirt gathering anywhere on the connections in the lines and the compressor manifold. I have seen one leaking inside the dash which is difficult to find without a nitrogen sniffer.
