Both Royal Purple and Redline 10w40 are on the lower end of the 40wt range, so it shouldn't cost you more than a hp or two, and the MPG shouldn't change by more than maybe 0.5 if even that much.

But that's a small price to pay for lower consumption and possibly better engine protection too. Part of the reason LS1s consume oil using Mobil 1 is because their 5w30 and 10w30 are both on the low end of the 30wt scale.

I prefer amsoil 5w30! I use amsoil through out my drive trains of my 2001 WS6 and My Durango R/T. I have noticed performance gains and better fuel economy. IMHO amsoil products are among the best!

hope that helps

Just don't do extended intervals (7k+) on the very first interval after switching brands. On the first interval with a new brand, stick to a 5-6k interval.

ok guys! I've got a question. My husband says there's not since in buying the synthetic oil & paying such a higher price. Just to use a good oil at 5W30. What do you think? I don't race my car (except on the main road!), & temps can range from 0degrees to 95 degrees where I live. any input?

If you read through this and other posts you can see the advantage of synthetic, it keeps the motor cleaner, longer service intervals, hp and mpg increase. People even said in some cases that the cold start piston slap went away. I will be using synthetic from here on out in both my G/f's car as well as mine......Scott

Scott,

I have used Royal Purple 'racing oil' RP21 since my first oil change around 1000 miles. I now have over 63000 miles and the engine ticks like it did new <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> I change the oil at 6000 mile intervals. I chose a niche (Red Line / Royal Purple) type of synthetic primarily because I felt comfortable with the extended change intervals. And because either has made more power on the dyno than Mobil 1.

Patman, i spoke with one of my best friends last week about Royal Purple. He is a professional engine builder named Joe Sherman(PHR contest winner) He told me about a 406" SBC he built for a guy out in Cali. that made 785 hp on Joes dyno, they drained conventional 10w30 and added 0w30 RP, it immediately made consistent 800 hp! 15 hp with only a oil change on the dyno! That is awesome to me, i wouldnt have believed it if this info was coming from almost anyone else but its true! Price on that oil seems much more reasonable to me now! LOL

Thinner viscosity is where the HP comes from. FWIW, I spent a day, and a good bit of cash, dyno comparing Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Red Line, and Quaker State Synthetic. All oils were 10W-30. Although there was virtually no significant difference, the oil that made the most HP in my car was QS. Go figure.
