Yeah that's true. Are there any VIN numbers or anything on the cluster that would be matched somewhere for the car?

Like you said the CARS MILEAGE can be rolled back with a low mileage odometer.
I didn't mean you can actually roll the numbers back on a digital readout. By changing the cluster you can "essentially" roll the mileage back to whatever you want in 20 minuts of R&R time.

But you have to order the cluster from a dealership out of town because if you go to the local dealership they will look at your mileage and put that mileage into the new cluster. If its an out of town dealership they will just ask what to put in and ship it to you Many friends of mine have done this, its actually very common.

do what "cruzc5frc" said to do. Give the dealership the VIN and they will be able to tell you the complete history of that car being in any dealership. Look at all the mileages that were recorded and put together a little historical record.

Well yea it's getting hard to tell who is responding to who here. I was responding to the guy who said
If you take the gauge cluster apart you can seperate the odometer from the rest. You can actually just roll the odometer back and stick it in the car
This was very true on something with the ones that spin in circles, yes you could take them out, 'adjust the mileage' and put it back in. Not with digital.

My overall point was the fact that there are people that have sold low mileage clusters out on this message board. Or any cluster for that matter you can put in the car and keep the original. Then swap it back when trying to sell it.

As far as ID'ing the cluster you might find a stamped date saying it was tested or look for casting clocks in the plastic, they do exist. I don't know what good thats going to do you though.

i may be wrong but i think if you use a tech II, you can see the mileage in the pcm as well as the cluster. maybe somebody else can prove this but im pretty sure of it.

You may be able to get a readout through the tech 2 but it's coming from the gauge cluster.
I've put different engine computers in a few cars and the mileage never changes.

When I bought my car Carfax said the same thing, during an inspection the wrong mileage was written down. The seller was able to get a bunch of paperwork from the state proving that. Just a thought.

I've read the milage from teh BCM in a 2002 car using a tech 2, it was not the same as the cluster (it was actually lower, but I assume the BCM was replaced at some time, very common to have to replace)

The PCM does not readout the milage that I have ever seen on a f-car. (98-02) I have had 5 different pcms in my car over the years.
