Default Radiator cap blew off

So I tried a search and didnt find exactly what I was looking for.

I was sitting at a light and I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the passenger side of my hood and I started to smell coolant, just like the time i blew my head gasket I figured that couldnt be the problem because I havent been ******* the car or beating on it or any such thing. I babied it home the next 3 blocks and when I got home and popped the hood I noticed that the radiator cap had blown off It had spit out a bit of coolant but I've been told that radiator caps can go bad and the same thing happened to my brothers old caddy. It has no other known issues and 60k miles on the motor.

Any other thoughts or ideas?

Possible the cap just failed. What was the temp gauge reading at? If the temp was fine I'd get a new cap and keep an eye on it for a while.

Well the temp was normal and I took the DD to the Advanced and picked up a new cap, taillight bulb and some dexcool. Put in all the new pieces and drove the car around the neighboorhood only to find out that the water pump (I think) took a **** on me squeals more with more rpm and the temp started climbing pretty quick under normal driving conditions.

Oh well, **** happens

your belt system is probably saturated with coolant (slipping) on top of that you may now have air in the cooling system that needs to be bled out. I wouldn't assume it's the water pump yet.

Water pumps just don't quit pumping water... they start leaking.

I changed mine due to leakage and it wasn't hard at all. It's like... right there! lol.

instead of writing up a new thread ill just post in here:

could air in the cooling system cause a water pump to squeal? or any kind of squealing noise for that matter? I let the car run and filled the radiator up til the level stayed steady with the t-stat open and havent had any issues since then, but i do notice a slight squeal. its not nearly as loud as it was when i first had these problems.

No, I don't see how. Its probably a pulley.

pulley went bad from the coolant exposure, or the belts are still slick from residual coolant.
